The District of Highlands policing is supplied by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) West Shore Detachment.
The West Shore RCMP proudly provides policing service to: City of Langford, City of Colwood, Town of View Royal, District of Metchosin, District of Highlands, Songhees First Nation and Esquimalt First Nation.
The West Shore RCMP provides a number of programs and volunteer opportunities including:
- Auxiliary Program - The RCMP Auxiliary Program strengthens community and police partnerships by providing trained volunteers with the opportunity to perform a variety of authorized activities that enhance community policing and crime prevention initiatives.
- Block Watch- Block Watch is a program to help neighbours watch out for neighbours. It aims to get citizens involved in preventing crime at the local level.
- D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)- The D.A.R.E. Program is a 10-lesson curriculum aimed at educating children at the grade five and six level about alternatives to drug and alcohol use. D.A.R.E promotes a healthy lifestyle and helps kids deal with everyday challenges by enhancing self-esteem and promoting a positive attitude.
- Keep In Touch (K.I.T.)- The Keep in Touch (KIT) Program is run through the West Shore RCMP Detachment’s Community Policing Section. Its purpose is to contact various elderly clients within the West Shore area who live on their own and do not have any family or close friends to check on them regularly.
- Restorative Justice- West Shore Restorative Justice is a program facilitated by volunteers with the West Shore RCMP. The primary mandate of the West Shore Restorative Justice Program is to facilitate Community Justice Forums where the accused take ownership of their actions and agree to reparations thereby diverting offenders away from criminal courts.
- Speed Watch- Speed Watch is an ICBC sponsored educational program aimed at reducing incidents of speeding. This program not only provides awareness to drivers who are speeding, but it also provides valuable data to the RCMP and ICBC on areas where speeding is a significant problem.
- Greater Victoria Police Victim Services- Victim Services provides emotional support, practical assistance and referrals to individuals who have been victimized as a result of crime or trauma.
