Province issues mining permit despite District concerns

Despite concerns expressed by the District of Highlands, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources has issued a permit to OK Industries Ltd. for a quarry on Millstream Road.

“The decision to issue the permit is of great concern to the District and the community,” said Mayor Ken Williams. “We have been very clear in our concerns regarding the quarry and our reasons in that regard.”

In June 2017 the District received a notice of referral from the Province with respect to OK Industry’s application.

The District expressed concerns and elevated its concerns through the Minister to the Premier, however, authority for issuance of the permit rests solely with the Provincial Government.

Correspondence from the District to the Ministry, Minister and Premier can be found on the District of Highlands’ website at https://www.highlands.bc.ca/494/OK-Industries-Ltd-Mines-Act-Permit-Infor

The District intends to carefully review the reasons for the decision to issue the permit despite concerns raised by Council and residents.

“Having only just received notification of this decision, we have not yet been able to fully review the reasons for the decision included with the permit,” said Mayor Williams.
