Tax deferment is a low interest loan program that helps qualified BC homeowners pay their annual property taxes on their principal residence. Visit the Deferment Section on the Province’s website.
The Province of British Columbia (BC) continues to offer the Regular or Families with Children (under 18) program. To qualify, you must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada who has lived in BC for at least 1 year prior to applying and meet the all other criteria listed on the Province’s website.
New application - forms and guides are available by completing the step by step Tax Deferment Eligibility Calculator option. The forms must be filled out, printed and brought in to the District of Highlands’ office and will only be accepted if all arrears/delinquent taxes have been paid and the Home Owner Grant (HOG) has been claimed. Although printed copies are available at the District, the Deferral Branch encourages all new applicants to visit their website to fill out the electronic form for proper formatting.
Renewals - reminder that the renewal process is NOT automatic. You must renew your tax deferment agreement each year. The Province mails you the Renewals and Statement of Accounts each May. Please bring this into the District Office along with your Tax Notice/HOG for processing.
